I’ve been back from D.C. for two weeks now, and I’m just getting back to our blog.  I’ve been keeping very busy with work, Mac and the household daily tasks!

Mac’s development has been much less physical and much more by way of SMART!  His communication is slightly lagging - he’s not talking yet, but he does understand better than we can sometimes believe!  He is jabbering more and more now, sometimes repeating the same syllables as if he’s saying the same thing over and over, but we just don’t understand him.  Here is an “inventory” of things he knows/understands when we ask him to do something:

  • Put your clothes in the laundry
  • Nuk out (takes it out of his mouth and usually puts it back in his crib)
  • Go get / Where is your… car, book, ball, shoes, blocks
  • Sit down
  • Lie down
  • Climb in your (car) seat
  • Stop
  • No
  • Give it to (Mommy, Daddy, etc.)
  • Put away your blocks/toys - this one we’re just starting to work on

He knows that to eat he needs to get in his high chair.  He also knows that “night-night” means he goes to his crib.  Sometimes he’ll even reach in for a nuk.

These are things he can sign, some with verbal reminders, but some unprompted or when asked “what do you want”:

  • More
  • Please
  • Eat
  • Milk
  • Help
  • Stinky (thanks, Nana, for that one - originally learned from her as “pew-y”)

He can wave “bye-bye” and also blow kisses!  We’re working on “thank you” which right now looks very much like the blowing kisses he does.  He sometimes remembers that if he signs “please” and sits down, chances are you’ll give him some of whatever you are eating or drinking.  And if you’re drinking from a plastic bottle or a cup, he’ll probably ask for some!

He can crawl in and out of his stroller by himself.  He can also climb in and out of his car seat now that we have a little stool from Jane!  He can climb onto lots of chairs and a couple of our sofas and the kitchen chairs; actually, he can climb onto just about anything if there’s something he can hold onto and pull himself up.

He loves the park - slides, stairs, swings, bring ‘em all on!  He also loves the pool, especially now that a broken pipe has turned off the shooting water in the little kids’ area.  I can’t say as we’re at all disappointed that it will be off the rest of the summer - now he can climb the stairs and go down the slides there too!  But he doesn’t need all that to be happy with water.  He loves to just splash around and even just stand by the sprinkler filling and drinking out of his little cup…

And not to worry, all… the kid is no angel.  He does not like to be told “no,” and very often that is followed by a (albeit short-lived) tantrum, sometimes complete with lying on the floor and kicking!  He really doesn’t like it when we get in the car to go then stop somewhere that he is not allowed to get out.  Oh, and taking him out for a couple minutes and putting him back in?  NO better.  The nice thing is, as I said, these tantrums are short-lived and can usually quite easily be distracted away, for lack of a better description.  Right, so he’s no angel, but we rarely complain because we know how lucky we are to have such a good little boy!
