Thirteen Months Old

Caution - long post ahead!

I say it every time, don’t I? I can’t believe how quickly the time has gone! Mac turned 13 months old yesterday. We are so amazed at how blessed we are. He continues to make great strides in his physical and cognitive development.

Mac hasn’t learned new signs and quite honestly has sort of regressed at the ones we thought he had learned. He resists “all done” and often replaces it with crying, something we’re trying hard to squash quickly! He will still sign for “more” when he is agreeable to it, which is maybe half the time. But he has learned some other things. He knows that he only gets his nuk in his bed. When we get him up, if he has it in his mouth, we only need to hold him beside his crib, sometimes cue him “nuk out” and he will take it out and drop it into the crib. He has also followed “nuk out” when we’ve asked him some other times (he is allowed his nuk when he is confined - carseat, stroller, church, etc.). It’s amazing to watch! I believe he is also learning some basic words and actions. When we say, “clap clap,” he will clap his hands. When we are playing in the living room with his toy box out, he knows what to do when we say, “shake shake” - he takes out his shaker toys. He sometimes takes the right toys out when asked, for example, a car, but I’m not sure yet if he knows or it’s coincidence. Those wheels are turning though, of that we are sure!

We’ve tried some new foods: Mac likes peanut butter, Daddy’s chili, tomato soup, Girl Scout shortbread cookies, and chocolate pudding but apparently doesn’t like watermelon or plain noodles (put cheese on them and he’ll make them disappear).

A couple of weeks ago we had Mac in as part of a study at the U of M about nutrition and development. At one point they had Mac playing with a musical toy, and he started to wiggle. They were surprised and asked Jeremy, “is he dancing?” To which Jeremy replied, matter-of-factly, “yes.” You’ll get to see a little of that in the video below. Mac loves music, which is no surprise to us!

Last night he insisted on playing with some 12-packs of soda sitting on the floor in the family room. Jeremy first watched as he picked one up (yes!) and struggled to get it open so he could take out the cans. After Jeremy helped him get it open, Mac proceeded to pull each can out and mimic drinking it before setting it aside and going for the next one. The kid is a riot. I only wish I had had the camera out for that!

I went a little nuts on video last week, so it took a while to get these all edited and posted, but hopefully it’s worth the wait. I combined the different “areas” of play over the days I recorded for a better look into how Mac changes and entertains us each day.
