More Toofers and Signs!

IMG_0228 At just a few days shy of 11 months, Mac has changed quite a bit!  It’s strange how one month it seems like nothing has changed, and then all of a sudden there are spurts of growth and new learning.

He cut a few new teeth over the last week or so, but in a different order than expected.  Instead of his next two coming on the top, he got two more on the bottom, one on either side of the middle ones.  Now he is getting one on top - it just broke through Wednesday according to Jeremy, but I didn’t see it until this morning.

Mac is also getting to be consistent with his “all done” sign after meals.  It started in Madison where he just did it once, but now he does it a couple times a day.  He also seems to use it for “bye-bye” because it’s so similar, but we’ll work on that.  We caught “all done” on video last weekend - I’ll try to get that one online this weekend.

He really is starting to look like he wants to walk.  Jeremy said when he was playing with him a few nights ago, he balanced and made one step before falling.  He also does a good job of standing with only a little help of holding on to something or someone, which Jane says is in the wrong order - they typically will walk from a standing position, fall, and use something to help them stand again.  Apparently it’s only after they learn that part that they usually learn to stand up on their own without help.  Leave it to our kid to do it backwards, big head and all.

And he is getting so big!  He finally grew legs, so this week I’ve moved in another bin of clothes and did a couple extra loads of laundry to change over his wardrobe to the bigger size.   We can’t have his pants too short in this cold weather!

IMG_0204 The kid likes to eat.  Holy cow.  When we go out to eat now, we are ordering a meal for Mac.  Although he doesn’t usually eat it ALL, he makes a good dent, especially in grilled cheese sandwiches.  This week we went out for Jeremy’s birthday to Cheesecake Factory, and although they don’t have a kid’s menu, they did offer kid-type foods.  So we ordered him a grilled cheese.  Look at the size of that plate!  He ate probably half of the sandwich without crust after eating a whole banana and some Cheerios.

He really likes to play what we now call “Open-Close.”  Anything that opens and closes or goes back and forth, he just loves.  We’ll sit with him, each of us on either side of his bedroom door, and he will open and close that door for a long time, squealing in delight!  He also likes cabinets and books.

We have seen much more emotion out of Mac lately too.  It might have to do with those teeth, but we can’t be totally sure.  He sure doesn’t like us to take him away from something he shouldn’t play with!  He continues to be pretty easy to read, though, and when he’s tired he’ll let you know - and usually go to bed without too much fussing.  It’s interesting too to see his levels of coping.  If he’s well-rested and fed, he could fall and hit his head and not even flinch.  If he’s tired, on the other hand, he’ll just wail.  I’m sure that’s completely normal, and we probably shouldn’t laugh, but come on, it’s funny!  He does seem to like being around people and to have people near him, so the “detox” from Christmas break made for an interesting weekend for us.
