Six Weeks Old

Vivian is six weeks old.  She can now go to daycare - but doesn’t have to go full-time for over four more months!

It is no longer anything out of the ordinary to have both kids by myself.  Jeremy has been working steadily this week from about 6:30 until 3 each day.  We have settled into a good routine, and it seems to be working.  Occasionally we get out to do errands.  Sometimes we play outside.  One morning Mac went to daycare while I sang for a funeral.  Many mornings we’re not even all out of bed until after 9:00!

It’s now been over a week since Vivian woke up before 5:30, and most of those have been closer to 6:30.  I think I can safely say she is consistently sleeping through the night.  She also seems to be settling into consistency in eating her last meal at 9:30 p.m.  That’s about 9 hours on average, my friends.  I must be the luckiest mother on the planet!  After her early wake-up, she usually goes back to sleep for a few hours, eats every 2-4 hours during the day, and takes a good nap at some point in the afternoon.  I birthed an angel, apparently, sent to us straight from heaven.  :)

Thursday night when I was working on getting “6 weeks” photos, we did some on her back on her big pillow, then I thought I’d see if I could get a few with her propped up on her tummy.  In the last few days she was much more stable when I put her up on her elbows.  Well, I had no sooner propped her up before she pushed herself over onto her back!  I was glad I had the camera in hand to get a short video!  She did it three times - twice for the camera - but everyone else missed it!  Check out our Flickr photostream for the short raw videos.

IMG_3814Mac is an amazing kid.  He has grown up so much in these six weeks we’ve been home together.  His manners are impeccable, as Jane would describe, and his tantrums have been few and far between.  His speech is improving daily.  He seems to like to learn new words, and I try to make sure I help him with that.  He also loves to count!  He counts almost everything he can - he can count all the way to 10 if not interrupted or distracted.  He also seems to know, at least up to four, that counting things tells us how many there are.  He knows he has four nuks in his bed, and he will tell you when he sees two of something, accurately.  He is also learning his colors.  He loves to build with his blocks and play with his cars, and he loves to color, jump and spin.  He calls any fancy birthday-type cake “happy cake” and I could listen to him say “choo choo… train” all day long.  There’s always a pause in there.  He’s completely addicted to the Playhouse Disney show “My Friends Tigger and Pooh,” and while I don’t feel I use it as a babysitter and do limit his TV time, I must admit, what he’s learning from it and how nicely he asks to watch it make it easier for me to allow it.  Mac seems very comfortable in our routine and most of the time agreeably does what he’s asked/told.  We have had a battle or two over naptime, but Mommy always wins - and I have to say it’s hilarious to watch him (and sometimes hear him) hit the deck when I open his door and he’s supposed to be lying down.  Sometimes when he doesn’t do what I say right away, I do start counting (lucky for him I rarely get to three), or ask him to look at me so I know he is listening.  With toddlers, it really doesn’t matter if you told them ten times… if they weren’t listening!  I wish I could have a video camera on him every waking hour.  Between the bouncing around the house and his adorable voice as he asks for “one Tigger Pooh on, please?” I can’t get over how very blessed I am.  The only way it could be better is if I won the lottery or Jeremy got a great high-paying job so I could stay at home with him every day!

And how am I?  I’m hanging in there and enjoying my time with the kids.  I wish I could say my mind is like it used to be, but perhaps it is.  I don’t care to admit the number of times in a day I say, “oh yeah, that’s what I was doing…”  Laundry gets started and not finished, the kitchen is left in shambles after a meal, etc., etc., etc…  I’m still pretty busy with work, but I’m trying to keep the stress at bay.  And no one is worse for the wear, so I guess we’re doing ok.  As I said, I do seem to be getting more than the normal amount of sleep expected of a mother of a six-week-old and a toddler, and I’m not complaining for one second!  I have my moments when my patience runs out, but who would expect any less of a woman working three jobs at once?  I wouldn’t change any of it for anything.  After all, for the most important job I have, who else has cuter bosses than I, even if they DO both wear diapers?!

There are definitely similarities between Mac and Vivian, as many have commented.  I was curious to see if the pictures matched how I remembered things… what do you think?

I’ve got two more days with both kids on my own under my belt.  Wednesday I even took them both out on errands!  I’m managing to even get some work done.  In addition to what I already knew I would have to work on, we had flooding from a broken toilet into one of our computer labs, so I have to add some repairs and replacements to my already busy summer project list and am behind on some things I was hoping would be finished before the end of school.

Mac was very cute the other day.  He was playing with a wireless receiver for a computer mouse & keyboard that has a button on it.  He walked over to Vivian, who was in her bouncy seat, and pointed out the button to her.  He even tried to put it in her hand and get her fingers to push it.  I was tearing up watching it!  That stuff you just can’t capture on video or film…

Mac is in a bit of withdrawal from all his quality Nana time, but he is adjusting.  We haven’t had any unusual tantrums or outbursts, and he seems to be settling in to our stay-home routine fairly well.  Hopefully soon we can add some outside time, but it’s been too crazy to add that just yet.  I could use some time out of the house too - and in the summer sun!

Vivian is growing but other than that not showing too many other developments at the moment.  She is on a bit more of a consistent schedule of eating and still likes to sleep much of the day with some alert times here and there.  I admittedly haven’t had her doing as much tummy time as I did with Mac, and we certainly haven’t done any video yet.  :(  This kid will never forgive me for how I’ve denied her…  But after looking back at my blog posts of Mac, I am dedicated to rectifying that ASAP!

Three Weeks Old

My biggest regret at this point is that I haven’t taken nearly enough pictures!  I got some from my mom, but I should have my camera attached to me…

Mac is still doing really well.  He is interacting more with Vivian when she’s on the floor or in her bouncy seat.  He likes to cover her up, and after being told just once or twice, usually remembers not to put the blanket over her face!  He will occasionally help, and sometimes will go get things we need for her, but not always.  My only real frustration at this point is in the times when I’m alone with both kids and feeding her, literally stuck, and he is either out of sight or doing something he shouldn’t and not listening when I tell him to stop.  We’ll have to keep working on that!

Mom and I got some work done in the garden before she left this past week.  We pulled out the peony that had WAY overgrown its britches.  As soon as we had one big rain it was falling over and just plain ugly, just like last year, so I was ready for it to go away.  I wanted something more colorful there anyway, since it’s our main entryway.  Pulling and digging it up, however, was no small feat!  We put in a delphinium, in the same color as was in my wedding bouquet ;), a pink lady slipper?, and a pink yarrow.  I also bought some tomatoes in that trip, and another perennial (bee balm) to put in the back by the garage where there are lots of bare spaces once the tulips have finished blooming.  I also finally dug up the irises, the last of the plantings on the back side of the house where we’ll just put landscape rock or mulch since the soil is less than ideal there.  I moved some of the more hardy ones to the back by the garage, opposite the tulips, and got rid of the ones that haven’t bloomed since we moved in.  I also had hoped to get some annuals planted, but with all the rain we had, it just didn’t get done.  I’ll have to use that Mother’s Day gift next year!

Monday was my first (and really only so far) day with both kids on my own since Mom left early that morning and Jeremy worked.  As luck would have it, the day started with an email from work that the internet was down at our Penn campus and I was soon on the phone with both work and our internet provider to resolve it.  After feeding Vivian, I packed up both kids and headed off to the office!  Vivian just slept, and Mac was very good for the short time I needed to get everything back up and running.  In hindsight, had I had my head on straight, I could have walked someone through the restart that needed to be done, but alas I did not…  Back home then to finish our day, which ended up going very well.

Tuesday I had more work to do, including a meeting, so Mac went to daycare for the day.  Vivian went with me and was no trouble at all.

Wednesday, we all hit the road to Madison!  Jeremy was scheduled to work in Wisconsin Dells Thursday through Sunday, so we hitched a ride to spend more time with Nana - and meet the Maiers family for the first time!  I also got to visit with some friends, and we’ll get to visit with Jeremy’s cousin (turns out Jeremy is off today and part of tomorrow) who also just had a baby girl just a few weeks before we did.

Two Weeks Old

Vivian had her 2-week check-up yesterday.  She had a glowing report!  She’s weighing in at 8 pounds, 11 ounces (75th percentile).  Her height is still 21 inches (90th percentile) and head is still 14.5 inches around (75th percentile).  The doctor was very impressed with her strength and head control, and he was surprised to hear how she has been sleeping at night.  At that point she had slept 6 hours straight for 2 nights (not in a row) - now it’s been 3 - this week!  She’s a few weeks ahead of “average” on her sleeping and eating, and the doctor said he’s not sure he’s seen such a thing in his 19 years.  I fully expect this will not continue, but each time it happens, no matter how infrequently, is a blessing in my book!

We’ve had some crummy weather in the last week, so yesterday was the first time in several days we could go outside with the kids.  We played out there for a couple hours after bringing Mac home from his play date with Henry at Aunt Jane’s.  Mom and I had been out and about quite a bit during the day, starting with Vivian’s doctor’s appointment, breakfast at OPH, a trip to Bachman’s to get some perennials to replace the peony we pulled out today, and a chiropractor visit before picking up Mac at Jane’s.

Mac interacted more with Vivian today than he has so far.  She was lying on her play mat in their room, and he went over to her and was getting down close to her face and giggling.  A little later, Mom was holding her, and he noticed some drool on her face.  He used his finger to wipe it, then I asked if he wanted the burp cloth - he took it over to her and wiped her mouth.  It was adorable, but of course I couldn’t quite catch any of this with the camera!

Speaking of photos, don’t forget to check out our photostream on Flickr once in a while.  I try to upload pictures there but don’t always include them in blog posts or on Facebook.

Finally… A Middle Name!

Posted By Jill on June 15, 2010

I finally made up my mind on a middle name for Vivian.  It took a while because of all the opinions I’ve been getting and my lack of decision-making abilities lately (maybe a bit due to lack of sleep?!)…  I asked Jeremy to help me decide, but it turns out what I really needed was to talk it through out loud with him.  I don’t know that he actually gave me an opinion now that I think of it - I think I just was able to decide after talking to him.

Vivian’s middle name is Cecilia!  Vivian, for those who don’t know, is in honor of Jeremy’s paternal grandmother.  Maybe he’ll post something about why he felt so strongly about naming her after his grandma - she sounds like a remarkable woman.  Cecilia is in honor of both me and my mom.  Each of us chose Cecilia as our confirmation name - I didn’t know it was also hers when I chose it for myself.  Cecilia is the patron saint of musicians and church music.  How fitting!

2nd Week

IMG_3567 Vivian slept through the night for the first time on Sunday night.  Unfortunately, Mac woke up crying at 2:00 a.m.!  Last night, she woke only once to eat at 4:30, but again Mac woke up early - at 6:30.  Well, eventually we’ll get things worked out.

I noticed yesterday that Vivian was able to track Jeremy as he walked into the room.  She followed him all the way across the room where he sat down.

Other than some feeding issues that seem to be getting better now, things have been going really well.  Vivian has some alert time right away in the morning and then sleeps away most of the rest of the day, though today she had a few more alert times.  That’s all fine as long as she’s sleeping at night also, and she does!  Mac continues to do really well and has learned that he can ask us to pass the baby to someone else if he wants to play with one of us specifically.  The only time that doesn’t work is when I’m feeding her, and he seems pretty accepting of that so far.  Once in a while he also thinks she should be in her bed when it’s time for him to go to bed, but so far he hasn’t complained when we tell him she’ll be sleeping in our room in her bassinet.

My recovery has been good so far and my pain is well under control.  I still can’t move all that quickly, but that is to be expected.

Daddy’s Shirt

Posted By Jill on June 15, 2010

IMG_0364 Today we all (Mom, the kids and I) went on an outing to get Mac’s hair cut and get some necessities at Target.  We walked in to the mall through Kohl’s.  Mac saw a shirt, pointed to it, and said, “daddy’s shirt.”  It was a Vikings t-shirt with “World’s Best Dad” on it.  On the way back out, he found it again and did the same thing.  I had to get it.  He carried it to the check-out, put it on the counter, handed the cashier the credit card, and carried the bag to the car.  When we got out of the car at home, he wanted to carry the bag.  When we got in the house, Jeremy was downstairs.  Mac took the shirt out of the bag and took it downstairs and gave it to Jeremy.  It was one of the cutest things I’ve seen in a long time.  Jeremy came upstairs wearing the shirt.  Apparently Mac told him to put it on.  Adorable.  Happy early Father’s Day, Jeremy!

One Week Old

IMG_3526 We’ve had a pretty lazy week.  Vivian eats, sleeps a LOT and has some occasional alert time.  I’ve managed to get a few things done around the house but have mostly taken it easy.  I’ve been fairly well-rested too, thanks to her pretty regular and efficient nighttime schedule.

Mac continues to do well with his new little sister.  When she is at the dinner table with us, he has tried to offer her some of his.  It’s so cute!  He also likes to give her a hug and kiss goodnight, and tonight when I had her in his room at bedtime, he wanted me to put her in her crib.  I did, and he climbed up and patted her like we do to him at bedtime.

We haven’t gone out and about too much except a couple of trips to school to introduce Vivian to people there (and pick up some work stuff).  We might consider an outing with the kids next week if I’m feeling up to it.  Even a trip to the park would be nice for Mac if the weather cooperates!

My mom continues to be a huge help as Jeremy had to go back to work on Wednesday this week.  That would have been nearly impossible had she not been here since there is still a lot I can’t do as I recover.

I’m trying to keep the camera close by for those rare alert times, but the eyes open shots are few and far between.  Here’s the best so far:

Baby Vivian: Day 6

Posted By Jill on June 8, 2010

Last night’s feeding and bedtime schedule worked out just as I had hoped.  After I fed her at 10ish, we went to bed.  Vivian slept until about 1:30.  She ate well and slept again until 5:30, ate well and slept until 9:30 a.m.!  That meant I could sleep in, and I took advantage of that, sleeping until 9.  Ahhh…

It was raining today, so we were stuck inside all day long.  Jeremy was busy with errands and laundry, and some other stuff around the house.  The rest of us were pretty lazy.  I did work on organizing and sizing the girl clothes after Jeremy did the laundry - that was about the limit of productivity for me.

Mac seemed to have a rough day.  Around lunchtime all he wanted to do was cuddle with me and a nuk in his room.  He did seem to be in some kind of pain also, but I couldn’t get him to tell me what was hurting, so I’m not sure.  He was also noticeably tired.  We did get him to eat some lunch, then he went down for his nap and seemed much better after that.  In case the problem was that he was missing me, I made a very conscious effort to have Mom take Vivian while I played with him after he got up from his nap, and he wanted both Jeremy and me to sit with him while he watched Tigger & Pooh before bed.  He went to bed nicely.  Hopefully he’ll be ok tomorrow, and I’ll do more to play with him when I can.
