Growing Up

Posted By on April 13, 2010

Mac is growing up too fast!  But as we look ahead, some of the things he can do will be very nice once the baby comes.  He really takes pride in doing things for himself, thank goodness!  He isn’t really doing too much new really, but he’s getting better at the things he knows.  He can put on his own pants and socks, and jacket and hat.  He can clean up his toys and help put away the clean dishes.  He even likes to carry his own backpack now and can almost put on his own lotion (rub-rub).  We are so happy that he seems to be a kid who just “gets it” when it comes to doing things on his own and figuring stuff out.  He’ll study what’s going on and seems to absorb just about every bit of it.

He is talking a mile a minute, sometimes with words we can understand and sometimes not.  It’s adorable.  It seems like every day he says a new word.  He is learning the names of the people he sees regularly and readily gives hugs and kisses!  Some of his new words are diaper, thank you (if we ask him to say it instead of sign it), nuk, bib, Maggie (the dog next door), and backpack.

We’ve witnessed some good tantrums, but we have also thankfully witnessed Mac’s ability to come out of them quickly, so that helps us to stick to our word and be stubborn with what we’re trying to accomplish.  Hopefully that will pay off!

I wish I could pull out my blog, stop time and write every time he does something cute just so I don’t ever forget it.  Maybe I’ll do more short blog posts…

The other day he had a mega-tantrum when we had to leave the park.  He would have thrown himself out of the stroller had I not strapped him in.  He continued his tantrum after getting home, getting into the house and as I prepared lunch.  I took off his shoes and moved him to the living room where he’d be safer to toss himself around kicking and screaming.  He came into the kitchen a couple of times screaming, and I asked if he was ready for lunch, to which he replied with more screaming and left the room.  I proceeded to get his lunch ready, and at one point he came back into the kitchen as I was putting ketchup on his plate.  He stopped – cold – pointed, and said his word for ketchup.  I asked if he was done with his tantrum and wanted to have lunch.  He said yes and climbed in his chair as if nothing had happened.

One day when we were watching one of his favorite shows, “My Friends Tigger and Pooh,” he started singing the last word of each line in the opening.  And at the end of the opening sequence, it shows the main character, Darby, with the logo, along with Tigger and Pooh.  The song ends with words in the title and Darby pointing with both hands up to Tigger then down to Pooh as she sings.  Mac does that same exact thing every time we watch, while he’s singing.

When we’re giving hugs before he goes to bed, he has started to rub our backs the way we rub his when we hug him.

This is our Easter weekend – dying eggs, hunting for them with cousins, and playing with new toys and in the sandbox!

Mac has been a good helper around the house as always.  He even wanted to help Daddy put the bassinet together!

And this week Mac started “parent and child” swimming lessons!  He loved it!  The pictures really don’t do justice to the squealing delight of the little guy.  I got to be in the water with him this time, but I think we’ll take turns when we’re both available.  I wasn’t sure how difficult it would be for me to do being 32 weeks pregnant.  It was actually not bad at all (that weightlessness thing makes it easier!), but I’m willing to share the joy!
