Changes Abound

I feel badly that I haven’t posted any updates lately as Mac has changed so much over the last couple of weeks.
He has eight teeth now, at least cut through, not all the way in. The means he can bite off pieces of food (bread, pasta, and of course those bananas he loves). We no longer cut off the crusts of bread either – we don’t want him to get used to it, even though I think Jane still does it at daycare.
He is learning more communication as well. While he is nowhere near consistent, he has shown us “more” and can also clap his hands! He still gets the signs mixed up and won’t always do them when asked, but we are excited that he can now imitate us and seems to enjoy it. He also is learning the word “no,” probably sooner than he would have hoped. He does respond to it, usually by stopping what he’s doing! We try to give him explanations, which I’ve read is a good practice and helps toddlers to learn reasons for rules.
The walking is coming along but (it feels like) slowly! He can consistently stand up by himself in the middle of the room without support, usually with a toy in his hand! This is, of course, the wrong order of things. He’s apparently supposed to stand with support, take steps, then fall, then learn to pick himself up without support. Silly kid. He has had times where he’s taken three or more steps before falling, but he does best when he’s not thinking about it or being coerced. We are still holding out hope that the next week will bring lots of progress in this area, making our trip a little more easy on all of us!
Some things are still the same-old same-old. Mac still loves bath time and is fascinated by water. His favorite is putting his hands under the running water and trying to catch it. It’s adorable to watch. He is still a very good baby – flexible, tolerant and portable! As long as he’s had a good nap in the day, he tends to be pretty good. Usually he takes two naps but can seemingly go without the second if the first was high quality and he is distracted by surroundings or events.
We took Mac to Blessed Trinity’s Sno*Ball event last weekend where there was live music. We weren’t sure how he would do or if it would be too loud. He had a good nap in the morning but not much of one in the afternoon, so we were cautiously optimistic that there would be enough distraction that he’d be good for as long as we wanted to stay. And he was! We had him out of the room when the band started to play but brought him in soon after, and he was just fine. Jeremy and Steph even took him up by the band (and speakers) at different times and he was still ok. He lasted until 8:00 before he started to get cranky! This bodes well for our upcoming trip, as does our little trip to Mall of America last week when “Sharky” (the Underwater Adventures mascot) was walking around – Mac was very interested and not at all scared of the big fuzzy character!
The Rest of Us
Kindergarten is still the longest but sometimes most rewarding hour of my week. I felt great accomplishment last week when during the Learning Fair (one of our Catholic Schools Week events), one of my teachers pioneered a technology project to take the place of display boards! Our E-Rate papers are filed for next year, still eight days ahead of the deadline (go me!). There always seems to be something forcing me to finish early, which is nice – last year it was the impending birth of Mac, this year it’s our trip to Disney! That was my last really big deadline and task for the school year. It’s downhill from here! Other than being very busy, which I kind of like, work is still good. Everyone has “those days,” but mine are thankfully few and far between. It’s been pretty cold which has made me lazy, and ever since Christmas vacation I haven’t walked to work nearly as often as I would like. Hopefully that will improve soon. I forced myself to walk on Tuesday, so that was a good start.
Jeremy has been blogging again but on his own site, so you’ll have to get his updates there.
Watch for updates next week from The Happiest Place On Earth!
