Fourteen Weeks
Posted By Jill on May 21, 2008
Mac has been sleeping through the night consistently now (I think two weeks is a safe bet). Depending on our activities in the evening, he goes to bed between 9:30 and 10:30, and he wakes up between 6 and 7. For the most part he’s content in his crib when he wakes up, looking at his mobile and/or playing with his hands. Occasionally he wakes up fussing, but he has gone back to sleep either with his pacifier or a little rocking. He gets fussy to eat between 7 and 7:30, then he’s ready for his first nap around 9:30 or 10. He is nursing first thing in the morning and before bed and has three bottles during the day of anywhere from 6-8 ounces. Now if only I could get myself to bed at the same time he is…
Tummy time hasn’t changed much in the past few weeks. He will still scoot if you put something behind him to push off of, but he can’t move forward on his own. He can lift his head and support his torso on his arms. He can also get up on his knees, but only by planting his face in the floor. We’re a ways from crawling at this rate.
He does seem to notice his toys hanging above him when on his back. He definitely notices the lights on his swing and is mesmerized by them. He can’t quite control his hands and arms enough to bat at the toys yet.
He discovered (and really seems to like) his hands recently. As I mentioned above, he plays with them – puts them in his mouth – just about any chance he gets. This causes a bit of a problem when he really wants his pacifier but knocks it out and can’t get it back in just yet.
His hair is really coming in now, but it’s still hard to tell what color it will be. It looks pretty light sometimes, but in the right light it still looks red.
At twelve weeks I wrote about how Mac liked to sit up with help, which he still likes, but now he also likes to STAND with help! He will let you pull him up from lying on his back to sitting, and sometimes from sitting to standing. He even occasionally seems to push up himself to tell us he wants to stand. He can definitely bear quite a bit of his weight on his legs but is nowhere near standing on his own. He’s doing much better at balancing when sitting but still can’t hold himself up in that position either.
His consistent schedule and predictability has allowed us much more freedom these days. I took him with me to work on Friday for the 8th grade play that started at 9 a.m., and he slept through it (except for waking up every time there was applause). He woke to eat after that then played for a while in my office while I worked. I had to go to the computer lab to work on a broken computer so put him in his carrier facing forward. He was happy for a while, and when he got fussy, I just turned him around, gave him his pacifier, walked around for a few minutes, and he fell asleep. I kept working! It’s things like that that prove just how spoiled we are. He is SUCH a good baby. We are able to take him just about anywhere. We are usually able to adjust his schedule just slightly to work in a nap during church, work, shopping or errands. Yesterday I took him to work again where he slept through my seminar, and he behaved at CJ’s band concert in the evening too, including a little cat-nap thanks to Aunt Jo. Don’t get me wrong – he’s still in charge of the schedule, but I’m better now at tweaking it and planning for the few possibilities there may be. For example, yesterday morning I was trying to decide if I should get lunch myself and be ready to go when he was ready for a nap then feed him at work or wait for him to nap at home and feed him before we left. He decided for me – he fell asleep at home before I could even start getting ready! As long as there are a few options and we leave some extra time, we do pretty well. And it only took fourteen weeks!!
