The Crib

Mac decided last week that as a 10-week-old, he no longer needed to sleep in the bassinet in Mommy & Daddy’s room. He didn’t so much tell us as show us… I rocked him to sleep, and the second I put him down in the bassinet, he woke up – WIDE awake. I let him try to settle himself, but he’d have none of it and started to cry. So I picked him up and rocked him, let him only get drowsy (I had read that sometimes a baby will settle better that way than being put down when they’re sound asleep). When I put him down in the bassinet, same thing, WIDE awake! Again, I let him try to settle himself without success. I picked him up again to rock him, let his eyes get heavy, and this time put him in his crib. Sound asleep in seconds. Hmm… He slept until 5:30 a.m.
He has slept in the crib ever since, for a week now. Only once did he wake before 5:00, and even at that he woke at 4:00 instead. Only once did he not go right to sleep within 10 minutes of putting him down. And he still naps well during the day. He likes to sleep just like his Mommy & Daddy!
There could be many reasons for this, and I’m sure it has nothing to do with him actually wanting to sleep in his crib. The bedroom is a bit cooler than the living room where his crib is; when I put him down in the bedroom, the TV is on (we like to go to sleep with it on), and there is a lamp on so we can see where we’re going. Any one of those things, or all, or none, could factor in. But we are thankful that he seems to have transitioned to his crib already without incident.
