A Tourist at Home?

I went with our 7th and 8th graders to the Minnesota History Center today on a field trip. I had never been there, and although I am not a lover of history in general, I had heard that the History Center was a “must-see” attraction. So I took advantage of the free admission to check it out while also helping out a teacher who needed more chaperons. Well, I didn’t really have too much time to look around on my own having to make sure my group of 8th graders stayed together to get all their questions answered, but I did see enough to make me want to go back, and if you know me, you know that is saying a lot! The exhibits were interesting and engaging, with not too much reading.
Jeremy keeps saying (and has since we were dating) that he will take me to some tourist sites to get to know the area, but we have yet to hit but one, and that was just by chance. There is a lot to learn about the Cities and Minnesota, and having grown up in Wisconsin, I wasn’t taught it all in school. Makes me wonder how much kids know about one state if they’ve moved around a lot. I learned quite a bit today, such as why some things are named as they are, that Minnesota didn’t have a pro sports team until 1961 (what?!) and that Minnesota became a state 10 years after Wisconsin did. But I am looking forward to going back so I can take more time with the topics that interest me. I think a reasonable goal is to see stuff at least before my child starts to see them on field trips, which may be a challenge since Aunt Jane starts those field trips in her day care!
One really cool thing I learned today that our public libraries have a Museum Adventure Pass that can be checked out and used for free admission to many of the museums in the metro area, and even the zoos! What a terrific idea! I suppose Jeremy will claim he knew that all along…
