Best Laid Plans

Today was a beautiful sunny day. We woke to the sun over the lake and planned to drive up to see one of the largest waterfalls in Minnesota. It was a bit of a longer drive than I thought, but we continued through to Tettegouche State Park, just north of Silver Bay. We had some great scenery on the way. After checking in at the office for a map, we headed out for our 1.5 mile hike to the High Falls… up the steps… down the steps… under the bridge… up the steps… and onto the trail. After only about one-tenth of a mile, however, the trail continued to look like this:

And after trying to stay a little off the path and stay dry, my socks were wet and I was starting to worry about slipping and falling. The mud was slippery and so were the leaves on the side of the path, and tip-toeing around the mud using small trees for support was not the safest situation for someone who is six months pregnant. So we turned around. This is as much of a waterfall as we saw:

So, we didn’t see the big waterfall (oh well), and now with dirty pants and shoes and wet socks, rather than continue forcing the plans I had to drive to Duluth and check out Canal Park, I gave up the planning for the day and turned it over to Jeremy. He chose returning to our room to relax some more. I could hardly disagree. After all, I was starting to get hungry… We stopped at a scenic overlook at Silver Creek Cliff on the way back to learn about the tunnel and take some pictures.

So we’re back in our room, where we are guaranteed success with relaxing, watching TV, blogging, knitting, and maybe playing some games. I’m sure someday we’ll have a chance to come back and see the waterfall. For now, I’m perfectly content with our view.
